war

Today I saw an amazing movie. I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie that really moved me. The movie I saw was called “Flags of our Fathers” and I think everyone should see it. There is no love story involved; it is just an amazing depiction of what one group of men went through in WWII. The movie was directed by Clint Eastwood, and the way it was filmed gave me chills at points.
I know the basic story of WWII, not a whole lot because for some reason out schools think that knowing every move our found fathers made is more important than a war that still affects us today. I know that many people died but for some reason this movie showed me exactly how random the carnage was… It was simply luck that you lived and the person next to you died. People didn’t shoot at the person they shot at the mass moving toward them. There was no reason for why your best friend died and you didn’t… I never realized this completely until tonight and I was so moved I was in awe of what was unfolding on the screen before me.
I can not imagine wanting to get shot in the leg, or arm or chest….because then I could be sent home and not be blown to pieces.
The devastation that those men saw must have been unreal, and something I will never truly understand. People never talk about things like this because it is too hard for them. But I believe that everyone should know what happens in war… If people really knew what went on…maybe just maybe there wouldn’t be so much war.
Maybe if Bush himself was put in a Marine’s shoes for a week he would sent our men home a little sooner. Maybe if it was his little darling twins over in Iraq he would end this pointless war and realize he has simply just royally fucked a generation of young people. Bush knows nothing of the harsh reality of war.
A friend of mine went to the movie with me and we were talking about how generations are labeled and eras are given titles later on in history. I believe it is very possible that we will be known as the “Terrorism Era” that word seems to be some magic word that makes this war okay.
We are fighting to prevent future terrorism.
The truth of every war eventually comes out in the end. When we are 50 yrs old we will know the real reasons behind this war and we will see how crazy it is to have some of our liberties taken away in the name of “Homeland Security”.
And then we will go to see a movie about the war in Iraq and see that it wasn’t at all what we think it is now. No war is ever what people think it is.
I liked the idea in the movie about how a picture can kill or save a war. This film focused on the photo of the 6 men raising a flag at a huge battle in WWII and how it saved the war effort. They mentioned how the photo of a solider shooting a man in the head killed the war in Vietnam.
I realized that event has already happened with this war, the photo’s of the torture of Iraqi prisoners was the turning point in this war. And now we are just trying to make it look like it was worth all the dead, destruction, and money.
But really nothing is worth the end of so many lives…nothing.
